The first thing you need to do is get the Snow Leopard install DVD from Apple. Apple didn't introduce downloadable OS upgrades until Snow Leopard 10.6.6, so you need to install Snow Leopard from the install DVD. Read my post 'Where to buy the Snow Leopard (10.6.3) install DVD' to find out how to get the DVD. My recommendation is to get it. I had lots of problems getting the mac appstore to work with the last 10.6.8 v1.1 and even before that when the original 10.6.8 came out. I did all the things I could possibly do and it would just come up with the same error, like in the first post. Run Software Update and be updated to Mac OS X 10.6.8 including the Mac App Store; Optional: Run Software Update again and get the latest 'Migration Assistant' download if you plan to transfer data from a 10.6 Snow Leopard Mac to another Lion equipped Mac; 2) Check for App Compatibility and Update Apps. Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) is out today, available in the Mac App Store for just $20. Unfortunately, installing Mountain Lion requires that you already have a Mac running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) or Lion (OS X 10.7).

Update Snow Leopard 10 7

Earlier today, Apple released the 7th update to its Snow Leopard operating system. The update boasts a few minor bugs that most are likely unaffected by, though it's worth updating, even if only for the satisfaction of running the latest version of the OS. Much like the previous Snow Leopard update, 10.6.6, the update is effortless; simply install and reboot! All hardware will continue to work as it previously did and the pmVersion=21 flag is still fully functional with SleepEnabler.kext.

You can grab the update at Apple.com.
